Understanding and Minimizing the Impact of Osteoporosis

Posted in What's New, Orthopedic News, Libertyville Division on Friday, 18 December 2015

IBJI’s Clinical Approach to Living Better with Bone Loss

As patients age, they face increased risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle. Because osteoporosis makes bones more fragile, patients with this condition are more susceptible to injuries. Having osteoporosis can lead to painful fractures, sometimes caused by simple actions like bending or twisting. For many people, it isn’t until a fracture occurs that osteoporosis is diagnosed.

Unfortunately, patients who have had a fracture due to osteoporosis face increased risk of suffering another fracture. Which is one of the reasons that IBJI is so committed to working closely with patients to educate them about the importance of diagnosing and treating osteoporosis as soon as possible.

Can I get prescription drug coverage under my Medicare plan? It’s critical to get those questions answered and understand the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans because the consequences can be significant if you choose the wrong kind of coverage.

The Medicare Rights Center outlines the key differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans in an easy to understand format. To learn more visit http://www.medicareinteractive.org or download the Medicare Rights Summary Flier.

Ankle replacements give patients more viability

By Brett Dworski
As seen in Chicago Health Magazine, Fall 2015

Dan Chesman, a former ROTC Naval Officer, shattered his ankle in 1972. Though a fusion procedure was recommended, Chesman knew it would limit his mobility and decided to wait, opting to stabilize the ankle with a series of pins.

Over time and due to advanced arthritis, the pain in his ankle became unbearable and he knew he needed to take action. Chesman met with Anand Vora, MD, an IBJI foot and ankle specialist, who helped him decide that a total ankle replacement was his best option for pain relief, improving mobility and maintaining a higher level of function.

After the procedure, Chesman felt like a new man, able to do things before he left the hospital that he hadn’t been able to do in years.

This Chicago Health Magazine article explores the types of arthritis that would require ankle replacement, why it’s an improved alternative to ankle fusion and the technology behind the procedure. Read the full article.

For more than 40 years, Grayslake resident Dan Chesman, 63, struggled with residual pain from a severe ankle injury he suffered in a toboggan accident as a young man.

Thanks to advancements in medical technology, he’s now enjoying a greater quality of life after undergoing a total ankle replacement.

“To anybody who’s considering it, I would say get it done yesterday, if not sooner,” said Chesman, whose surgery was performed in Jan. 2014, by Dr. Anand Vora, an orthopedic surgeon at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, which has locations in Grayslake, Libertyville and Chicago.

Back in Action after Anterior Hip Replacement

Posted in What's New, Libertyville Division, Patient Stories on Tuesday, 21 April 2015

Lonnie Smith, 71, is a man of action. For 22 years, he’d worked as a paramedic and fireman. He enjoyed outdoor activities and liked to build and repair homes, work that often found him climbing on roofs and doing heavy lifting.

But in his early sixties, he began experiencing some pain in his hip – pain that grew progressively worse over the next ten years.

“I started feeling unstable, afraid my hip would give out on me unexpectedly,” he says. “The pain was on and off, but when I had a hard time walking up and downstairs and started waking up at night in pain, I knew it was time to do something.”

Lonnie met Dr. Peter Thadani, IBJI/Libertyville, when his younger brother had a total hip replacement in 2013.

“I Got My Life Back”

Posted in What's New, Libertyville Division, Patient Stories on Tuesday, 31 March 2015

I Got My Life Back

The full-blown pain Jesse Manarang lived with for two years began gradually. It started in his early 40’s, with tingling and numbness in the index, middle and ring fingers of both hands. Then the pain began and spread, moving to his elbow, then shoulder, then neck.

As a dialysis tech at a north suburban hospital, Jesse had a physical job. After lifting patients for twelve hours, he came home exhausted and in pain.

His wife, Mildred, recalls, “Work, really everything, was so hard for him. He was getting depressed. He’d always been an athlete and loved basketball and lifting weights, but he couldn’t do his job or things he used to enjoy. He couldn’t drive our kids, both active in sports, to events. He couldn’t mow the lawn. He had to give up coaching our son’s football team. I was doing what he couldn’t and it was tough on all of us.”

Jesse finally made an appointment with IBJI-Libertyville orthopaedic specialist, Dr. Peter Thadani for elbow and shoulder pain. Dr. Thadani treated him conservatively using cortisone injections and epidurals, but when those failed to relieve the pain and Xrays of the shoulder showed narrowing of the spine’s cervical discs, he referred Jesse to his Libertyville colleague, spine specialist, Dr. Stanford Tack .

After an MRI, Dr. Tack diagnosed Jesse with a degenerative joint disorder of the cervical spine.

Says Dr. Tack, “Jesse’s condition was the result of genetics and weak disc structure. It wasn’t caused by trauma or injury, but there was clear early degeneration or herniation of several discs.”
