Orthopedic Surgeon with Fellowship Training in Joint Replacement Surgery and Assistantship in Sports Medicine
Dr. James C. Cohen is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of shoulder, knee and hip conditions, including arthritis, shoulder and knee instability, rotator cuff tears, labral (shoulder joint) tears, meniscal (knee cartilage) tears and ACL (knee ligament) tears. He has extensive experience in joint replacement of the hip and knee and arthroscopy.
Drawn to medicine by his fascination with how the body works, Dr. Cohen chose orthopedics as a specialty because it allows him to produce concrete results that significantly improve patients’ lives. In many cases he takes a conservative (non-surgical) approach to make patients better.
He is vice chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He is an associate clinical professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and the site director of U of I’s orthopedic residency training program at Weiss.
Dr. Cohen has completed a dozen marathons since reaching 44 years of age, including three Boston Marathons. His personal goal is to keep running long enough to win the New York Marathon in the 80-year-old age bracket.
I am an active runner and have competed in various distances from 5k to marathons, including the Boston Marathon. I have a special interest in treating running-related injuries.
