Biography
Dr. John D. D. Higgins is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, currently practicing with Illinois Bone & Joint Institute (IBJI). A North Chicago native, he completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City—the nation's leading orthopedic hospital.
Dr. Higgins performs minimally invasive robotic-assisted total hip, knee and partial knee replacement surgery. He has a strong focus on helping patients recover quickly and return to the activities they love utilizing the techniques he has mastered throughout his intensive training. He is an active researcher with numerous peer-reviewed publications in journals including The Journal of Arthroplasty and The Knee, focusing on clinical outcomes in joint replacement surgery, and has presented his research at national meetings including AAOS and AAHKS.
Dr. Higgins is a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the Young Arthroplasty Group of AAHKS. He earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, where he was a Division I student-athlete on the football team.
My philosophy centers on precision and preservation. By leveraging robotic-assisted, minimally invasive techniques for hip and knee replacement surgery, I'm able to protect surrounding soft tissues, preserve patient anatomy, improve implant accuracy and shorten recovery time — helping patients regain mobility and independence.
