Illinois Bone & Joint Institute is recognizing World Spine Day to highlight the importance of remembering how our spine, posture, and movement all contribute to maintaining a healthy back. This year’s theme, Straighten Up and Move, emphasizes the role of proper posture and movement in overall spinal health

Low back pain alone affects about 31 million Americans and is recognized as the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the Global Burden of Disease. Each year, Americans spend nearly $50 billion on treatments and products aimed at relieving back pain. The most frequent conditions include back pain, neck pain, scoliosis, and disc disease. These issues often interfere with work, physical activity, and routine tasks that most people take for granted. Interestingly, studies show that even small changes in daily posture can reduce back pain and improve spinal function over time.

With more people spending long hours seated at computers or looking down at devices, posture-related pain has become even more common. To protect your spine and lower your risk of injury, consider these healthy habits:

  • Maintain a healthy weight and balanced diet
  • Stay active with exercises that build core strength
  • Stretch before physical activity
  • Practice good posture while standing or sitting
  • Use safe lifting techniques
  • Choose supportive, comfortable footwear

This World Spine Day, take the time to focus on your spinal health. Remember to straighten up, keep moving, and support your back for a healthier future.
