The University of Illinois College of Medicine honored Dr. Wayne Goldstein, MD with the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award at its Reunion 2013 Dinner on October 4.
As a product of a University of Illinois education, Dr. Goldstein says that he owes much of his success to his experience as a medical student, resident and alumni advocate for many other College of Medicine orthopaedic residents. Dr. Goldstein completed his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois in 1974 and medical school at the College of Medicine in Chicago in 1978. He completed his orthopaedic residency training at the University of Illinois Hospital in 1983. Since 2000, Dr. Goldstein has held the position of clinical professor in the department of orthopedics at the University of Illinois College Medicine – Chicago.
In addition to his dedicated academic career, he is currently president, CEO and founder of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI) which includes over 20 locations throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, hosts more than 100 individual physicians and provides every orthopaedic specialty, comprehensive diagnostics and rehabilitation services. Dedication to his patients combined with a research prowess and desire to innovate, led the orthopaedic surgeon to create the IBJI in 1991. The private, office-based partnership has become a model for the delivery of healthcare, one that has been adopted by other medical specialties.
For Dr. Goldstein, medicine is about more than science. “There is a difference between treating a patient and caring for a patient,” he says. “Caring is comforting them and answering their questions.”
The Distinguished Alumnus award was Established in 1994 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
